Wayne Riley names 27-year-old favourite as he shares his top picks for the Players Championship

The Players Championship gets underway shortly and Wayne ‘Radar’ Riley has been giving his thoughts on who the top picks to win will be.

Riley will be among the Sky Sports media team covering the event at TPC Sawgrass as the PGA’s best go head to head to take home the ‘fifth major’.

Of course, all eyes are on a number of the game’s top players. Scottie Scheffler comes into the tournament off his huge win last weekend at Bay Hill. Rory McIlroy will hope for a big improvement on his last few rounds, while others like Xander Schauffele and Tommy Fleetwood will be hoping for big weeks as well.

Of course, picking a definitive winner in any golf tournament is tough. But writing for Sky Sports, Wayne Riley has gone with 27-year-old Scheffler as his top pick, as he questioned what we might see from McIlroy.

Speaking about the tournament, Riley has said that he fully expects Scheffler to go on and win it again.

“I don’t know what we’re going to get with Rory McIlroy at the moment, as he’s driving the ball so very well but his distance control hasn’t been very good and his form has been up and down. Driving through the gates might inspire him and kick him into gear because he’s won here before, but the same could be said about Bay Hill last week and it didn’t’ there. For me though, I fully expect Scheffler to go on and win again,” Riley said.

Scheffler, of course, comes into the tournament as favourite and world number one at the same time.

After winning last week and seemingly finding his way with the putter, there is a feeling around golf that he could dominate 2024.

A big win at The Players would send another message of intent out, just weeks away from The Masters.

Scheffler, then, seems like the man to beat…for now anyway.
