Scottie Scheffler’s domination of professional golf continued last week at The Open Championship.
Scheffler took the lead at Royal Portrush after 36 holes and never looked back, finishing four strokes ahead of second-placed Harris English.
The 30-year-old had already won the PGA Championship, the Memorial Tournament, and the CJ Cup Byron Nelson this season.
He has extended his gap to Rory McIlroy as the best player in the world, and he will probably not be caught anytime soon.
Now, former European Tour winner Wayne Riley has explained what Scheffler does better than anyone else in his lifetime.

Wayne Riley calls Scottie Scheffler the greatest player ever ‘out of the rough’
Wayne Riley reflected on Scheffler’s performance at The Open after he lifted the Claret Jug on the 18th green at Royal Portrush.
He even picked out one category where the American golfer is better than anyone he has ever seen, including Seve Ballesteros.
Riley said on Sky Sports Golf: “This guy on the tee, Scottie Scheffler, is the best player out of the rough that I have ever seen, and we have played with Seve, and he lived in it. He was unbelievably good.
“But this guy is incredible, how he can get it out of the rough and land so softly. The reason why is he’s so high on the backswing he can trough it out, he can dig it out. It’s an incredible talent.”
Scheffler’s driving was not perfect at The Open. He found the rough several times and, when it looked like he might drop a shot, he repeatedly made the green with world-class approach shots.

Scottie Scheffler vs Seve Ballesteros career achievements
It’s strange to say, but Scheffler’s peak is undoubtedly better than Seve Ballesteros’ was. The Spaniard never dominated the sport like Scheffler is today.
The Open champion has won 17 PGA Tour events, including four major championships, in the last four seasons (2022-2025).
| Scottie Scheffler | Seve Ballesteros | |
| Major wins | 4 | 5 |
| PGA Tour wins | 17 | 9 |
| European Tour wins | 5 | 50 |
| Weeks at No. 1 | 149 | 61 |
| Ryder Cup appearances | 2 | 8 |
However, if Scheffler were to retire today, he would not rank higher than Ballesteros in the debate of the greatest players of all time.
The Ryder Cup legend enjoyed far more longevity than Scheffler has achieved so far, and his impact on the game in Europe was unmatched.
