Viktor Hovland has shared an injury update ahead of the PGA Tour season starting at The Sentry in Hawaii.

It’s been quite the week on the professional circuit after Scottie Scheffler withdrew from the season opener due to injury.

Norwegian Hovland also suffered a freak injury whilst at his accommodation in Maui. The 27-year-old appears to have broken his little toe after colliding with a bed frame.

Doubt has emerged over Hovland‘s chances of teeing off at the Plantation Course. However, the European Ryder Cup star remains hopeful.

Speaking to Norsk Golf, Hovland claimed he’s still hopeful of participating in the season opener, with his toe already on the mend.

“I’ve hit a few balls, albeit without shoes and without putting any strain on my right foot. But I’ve got a lot less pain in my toe already. There’s a big difference from yesterday,” Hovland said.

“So we’ll see. I have a few days to decide. In principle, I think I can wait until Thursday. For now, I choose to stay on the start list.”

After Scheffler’s encounter with a Christmas Day knife, Hovland’s broken toe is undoubtedly one of the more bizarre injuries season on the PGA Tour.

Eventful week for Viktor Hovland

It’s not just an injury Hovland has had to deal with over the past week.

On Monday evening, it emerged that the Norwegian has once again decided to split from his coach, Joseph Mayo. “I don’t need to go into it in depth, but we had a bit of a disagreement about the way forward, what’s best for me,” Hovland explained.

“I feel that I’ve learned so much now and have so much expertise that I don’t need anyone to hold my hand anymore. It’s always good to have someone watching what I’m doing, checking out the steps I’m taking. So I send some videos to another coach, but he’s more of a consultant.”

Mayo and Hovland formed a strong partnership in 2023, which resulted in the 27-year-old winning the FedEx Cup at East Lake and finishing in the top 20 in all four major championships.

Hovland’s form also improved in 2024 after the pair reunited ahead of the PGA Championship. However, after their latest split, the Norwegian could be set to alter his technique once more, which didn’t work out well last season.
