Scottie Scheffler will not start his 2025 PGA Tour season at The Sentry, as previously planned.

Scheffler was set to tee it up in Maui alongside a number of the world’s best players. However, a freak Christmas Day accident means the American must spend extra time away from the course.

Scheffler‘s manager, Blake Smith, shared an update on Friday evening regarding Scheffler’s injury. “On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass,” he wrote. “Small glass fragments remained in the palm, which required surgery.”

The accident will be a setback for Scheffler, who recently participated in the PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf ‘Showdown’ and secured his ninth win of 2024 at the Hero World Challenge.

Scheffler’s next scheduled event is the American Express at the Pete Dye Stadium Course PGA West and Smith revealed the tournament in La Quinta remains on Scheffler’s schedule.

“He has been told that he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from The Sentry. His next scheduled tournament is The American Express.”

If the American can’t recover in time for his next event, the AT&T at Pebble Beach at the end of January could be the first time Scheffler is seen in 2025.

Three more freak golfing injuries

Scheffler’s Christmas Day incident will definitely be considered a freak injury, and several have occurred over the years.

Before the 2015 Open Championship, Rory McIlroy ruptured his ankle whilst playing football with his friends. The Northern Irishman was looking to defend the Claret Jug at St Andrews.

Another freak incident involved one of golf’s great characters, John Daly. During the 2007 Honda Classic, a female spectator jumped in front of him to take a picture. In an effort to stop his swing, Daly hit behind the ball. As a result, the American fractured two ribs and damaged his right shoulder.

Finally, Colin Montgomerie missed the 2003 Open after facing a very similar issue to Scheffler. The Scot injured his hand after tripping over a step at breakfast. “I couldn’t believe it was raining, and as I looked up, I tripped over a step and fell nastily,” the 2010 Ryder Cup captain said.
