Tyrrell Hatton is in the argument for being the single-most underrated golfer on the planet.

The Englishman made that case throughout the 2025 season. Tyrrell Hatton finished T4 at the US Open, his seventh top ten at a major championship, and entered the final day of The Open Championship in fourth.

Hatton continued his undefeated partnership with Jon Rahm at the Ryder Cup, as the Legion XIII teammates beat Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas in the first match of the tournament, and then bettered Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele on Saturday.

Then Hatton secured the crucial half point for Team Europe on Sunday, halving his match with Collin Morikawa to win the event. In doing so, he showed he has the bottle to close the deal with the world watching.

And he’s been told that he has something that his teammate, Rahm, doesn’t, that will see him win a major championship in his career.

Why Tyrrell Hatton will win a major championship according to European Tour winner

2025 was not a successful season for LIV Golf on the major championship stage. None of their players won a major, and only three LIV players made the Ryder Cup after a series of poor performances from their biggest stars.

This could be attributed to a number of reasons. LIV has changed to a 72-hole format, which could better prepare its players moving forward.

But it could simply be that the media whirlwind surrounding LIV, and the doubt surrounding its players’ ability to play on the DP World Tour, and therefore the Ryder Cup, in the future, is putting a mental toll on players.

The DP World Tour is particularly dear to Europeans like Hatton and Rahm, so losing their ability to play on the tour could raise serious questions about their future on LIV. But according to European Tour winner Oliver Wilson, Hatton manages that stress better than Rahm.

What is the main reason Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm have struggled since joining LIV Golf?

He said he’s sure Hatton will win his first major because of this mental strength, telling 5 Clubs: “I can’t see Tyrrell not winning a major, honestly. I just think he has the game, the mental game. He’s clearly got the physical game, but he’s got the mental game to get it done. He believes it. He’s unshakable, in a strange sense.

“I just think obviously there looks like there’s some chinks in the armour, but I just think his belief he’s going to win a major. Jon Rahm, I think this year is huge for him. There’s going to be some clarity coming to his situation.

“I feel like Tyrrell probably deals with that situation at the moment better than Jon Rahm. I think it’s taken away from some of his play this year, having to deal with it and try and figure out what that situation’s going to be.”

Rahm was the LIV Individual champion last season, but he was disappointed to be winless in 2025, and is one of the many players to see a loss of form since joining the Saudi-backed league. Rahm was calling for a change to 72-holes on LIV, so he will hope to see an improvement now that has been implemented.

As for Hatton, there’s a major championship that he should be eyeing intensely in 2026.

The major championship that Tyrrell Hatton is most likely to win

Hatton has shown that he has the ideal skill set to win The Open Championship. Twice a finisher in the top ten at the event, Hatton is a links specialist, and it’s only a matter of time before he gets it done on the biggest stage.

Hatton has a strong and successful history playing on links courses, particularly in Scotland, and holds a record three victories at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He won the event in 2016, 2017, and most recently in 2024.

Hatton once said himself that he’s more comfortable putting on the slower, undulating greens of links courses, and his shot shaping and ball-striking are well-suited to the windy conditions.

Meanwhile, the mental fortitude Wilson hails is also key. While Hatton has a fiery on-course demeanor, that’s actually a tool he uses to get his frustration out there and keep an even keel. That’s key to success on unforgiving links courses, so watch out for him at Royal Birkdale this year.
