Tyrrell Hatton finished what was an eventful week at the DP World Tour Championship in a tie for sixth as Rory McIlroy claimed his fourth win of 2024.
The Northern Irishman ended up clinching a relatively routine victory on the Earth Course’s 18th green after being pushed by Dane Rasmus Hojgaard.
LIV Golf star Hatton started the DP World Tour Championship with a 67 and a 66 in the first two rounds. The Englishman, however, faded during the weekend’s action.
| Pos | Player | R4 | Thru | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | R. McIlroy | -3 | F [F] | -15 |
| 2 | R. Højgaard | -1 | F [F] | -13 |
| T3 | S. Lowry | -4 | F [F] | -11 |
| T3 | A. Rozner | +1 | F [F] | -11 |
| T3 | A. Scott | -4 | F [F] | -11 |
Hatton was criticised heavily during the third round after losing his head on multiple occasions. Ahead of the final 18, Hatton wrote a two-word message on his glove as a reminder to keep his emotions in check.
Now, the 33-year-old has posted a message on social media, which is the first time he’s been heard from since the conclusion of the season finale.
Tyrrell Hatton’s message to Rory McIlroy
Taking to X on Monday evening, Hatton was straight to the point.
“6th place finish at the @DPWorldTour Championship,” Hatton wrote.
“Congratulations to @McIlroyRory on the win.”
McIlroy’s victory at the Earth Course sealed his third successive Race to Dubai title and sees him draw level with Seve Ballesteros’ order of merit tally. McIlroy needs two more Race to Dubai crowns to match the all-time record set by Colin Montgomerie.
Change needed for Tyrrell Hatton?
Unfortunately, Hatton’s DP World Tour Championship performance won’t be remembered for the right reasons. The Englishman’s temperament was tested on Saturday, and it’s now apparent change is required.
Hatton has the potential to become one of the game’s elite players and compete with McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele at the major championships.
However, keeping his emotions in check is a must if he’s to deliver in the most pressurised situations. Too often, the LIV man loses his head, which causes lapses of concentration and dropped shots.
Hopefully, the third round at the DP World Tour Championship will be a turning point for Hatton. The fierce criticism was justified, and it’s now up to Hatton to improve heading into the 2025 campaign.
