Englishman Matt Wallace was involved in an unsavoury incident during the latter stages of the DP World Tour Championship.

Wallace ended the season finale eight under and tied for 11th after carding a one-under-par 71 in Sunday’s final round.

The 34-year-old, however, let his emotions get the better of him on the par-five 14th.

After playing a relatively average third shot into the green, Wallace smashed his club into the fairway, taking out a massive chunk of the turf in the process. What’s more, European Ryder Cup hopeful Wallace failed to repair the damage.

Wallace has since come under fire on social media, with many rightfully criticising the incident.

Now, the Englishman has broken his silence on X, and, surprisingly, failed to offer an apology.

Taking to X, Wallace spoke about his performance and offered his thoughts on Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy. Unfortunately, there was no mention of the incident on the 14th.

“Not my best, but I tried my best,” Wallace wrote. 71 (-1) T-11 Always a pleasure to share the course with @ShaneLowryGolf. Congrats to @McIlroyRory & @haza13. Amazing year, and to all the @PGATOUR lads for getting their cards. One more week for me at RSM.”

Wallace added: “Big shout out to my team. Many to thank, but you all know who you are. Big things ahead and a big BIG year. We know!”

Unsurprisingly, golf fans were fuming with Wallace’s conduct. “Him & Hatton are a disgrace, they need to be sanctioned cos it’s a terrible look for the sport, wrote X under @finely_rufc5.

While @BenColeyGolf said“This is really bad. Repair the damage. It could cost someone the tournament, and he would be raging if it happened to him. So much of the goodwill for how he’s improved his attitude was undone, and all he had to do was repair it.”

Wallace has been working on maintaining a level head after previously having moments of madness on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.

Before this incident, the 34-year-old appeared to be making strides; however, that might not be the case. Furthermore, Wallace had an opportunity to apologise and recognise his error, but that chance has now passed.

The Wallace incident comes just hours after Tyrrell Hatton’s behaviour was slammed from all corners of the sport. The LIV Golf man, however, appears to have learnt his lesson. Hatton wrote a two-word message on his glove on Sunday to perhaps remind himself to keep his emotions in check.
