LIV Golf star Tyrrell Hatton has admitted he made a mistake after sharing advice with Jon Rahm ahead of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Hatton and Rahm both shot seven-under-par during the first day’s play at Carnoustie to start the lucrative DP World Tour event in impressive fashion.

Hatton admitted the conditions were ideal for low scoring at the iconic Scottish course, which is a contrast to previous years where wet and windy weather has challenged the world’s best players.

Before Thursday’s first round, Rahm revealed that Hatton had shared some advice about the DP World Tour event, and the Englishman has now admitted it was an error.

“Yeah, that was maybe a bad thing on my part,” Hatton told Sky Sports. “I was more saying it about St Andrews because he was moaning about where he has to hit it.

“When we play these courses during The Open, they’re a much harder challenge. Normally, you can’t really hit in the rough. At St Andrews you can basically aim left and hit driver everywhere. He obviously took that into Carnoustie, and it served him well, unfortunately.”

Hatton looks well on track to be in contention come Sunday’s final round at the Old Course. The 32-year-old is currently at 11 under after carding a 68 at Kingsbarns on Friday.

The LIV Golf star will now face two straight rounds at the home of golf as he looks to make Alfred Dunhill Links Championship history and become the first man to win three titles.

Rahm is three shots back on eight under after failing to take advantage of the favourable conditions at Kingsbarns.

Rory McIlroy is also off the pace after carding back-to-back 69s. The Northern Irishman will need to produce something pretty special at the Old Course on Saturday and Sunday if he’s to contend.
