Tyrrell Hatton carded a bogey-free seven-under 65 at Carnoustie on day one of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Hatton and 14 LIV Golf players are participating in this week’s DP World Tour event, which is being played over three of Scotland’s iconic courses: Kingsbarns, the Old Course, and Carnoustie.

Hatton enjoyed his first LIV Golf season, but the Englishman has returned to the DP World Tour on multiple occasions in 2024 in order to maintain his eligibility for the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.

Speaking after his first round at Carnoustie, a historic course located 25 miles north of St Andrews and to the east of Dundee, Hatton admitted he was fortunate to experience favourable links conditions on Thursday.

“Yeah, it’s a nice way to start the tournament,” Hatton said. “I think we can all agree we got very lucky with the weather.

“I mean, I know the courses are never easy when it’s windy, but this one probably has generally played tougher in the past. Getting Carnoustie on a day as calm as this was lovely, and it was nice to shoot a decent score.”

Hatton’s LIV Golf teammate Jon Rahm is also off to a fast start at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The Spaniard made six birdies and an eagle also to card 65 at Carnoustie.

Rahm is participating in this week’s event to maintain his eligibility for the Ryder Cup. The two-time major winner will complete his obligations once he competes in the Andalucia Masters.

Elsewhere, Brooks Koepka got off to a disappointing start, shooting a sub-par one under 71. Rory McIlroy, playing alongside his dad, Gerry, is three under, and Billy Horschel is two under.
