Tom Kim needed a podium finish at the 2024 Olympics, but instead, the 22-year-old watched on as his close friend Scottie Scheffler was awarded the elusive gold medal.
Kim was playing for more than just a medal at Le Golf National. The PGA Tour sensation knew a podium finish would see him exempt from military service in his native South Korea.
After finishing eighth, the 22-year-old must wait until the Los Angeles games to prevent a 21-month career break from materialising.
Despite missing out, Kim claimed Scheffler was supportive after the final round after a video emerged of the emotional South Korean in the scoring room. The world number one was also tearful when receiving his gold medal at the 2018 Ryder Cup venue.
Tom Kim now offers public apology after 2024 Olympic heartache

Kim has since taken to Instagram and explained how he is “sorry” after failing to deliver an Olympic medal in Paris.
“Until now, there are no Korean golfers who have Olympic games every month, so this time, Korean players ate hard and ran with the burden,” wrote Kim. “But I feel so sorry and more responsible for not doing that. I am very sorry for not getting the desired result.”
Kim went on to send his congratulations to Scheffler. “@scottie.scheffler, man, this guy never fails to impress me,” the 22-year-old added. I cherish our moments, but this one was very special. Despite what he had done, what you said to me after our round meant everything to me. I’m happy for you and your team. Congrats, Pards.”
Tom Kim still has time to gain exemption from National service
Fortunately, Kim has time on his side. He must complete military service before he turns 35, which means there are three more Olympic opportunities in the pipeline.
Famously, South Korean golfers Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim won gold at the Asian Games, allowing for an exemption to take place.
One less fortunate player was Sangmoon Bae. After opting to do his service at 28 and at the peak of his career, Bae failed to reach his previous heights upon his return to the game in 2017.
Given his career to date and potential, Kim stands every chance of landing an elusive medal and avoiding a massively unwanted career break.
