Tiger Woods is set to return to the course this weekend, five months after his last professional outing at the 2024 Open Championship.

Woods’ latest back surgery in September meant the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas came too soon for the 15-time major winner. The 48-year-old publically admitted his game wasn’t near the level required to compete with 20 of the game’s best players at Albany.

However, after footage of Woods practicing at the TGL arena emerged, there is optimism that the all-time great could be back playing in some capacity in 2025.

The PNC Championship, where Woods is allowed to use a golf cart, will provide fans with a clear update on what the American’s game currently looks like.

Woods’ fitness has become a long-standing headline within golf, with fans, pundits and players all eager to know whether the 15-time major stands a chance of returning to his former glory.

Now, Golf Channel reporter Todd Lewis has detailed what he knows about Woods’ current rehab ahead of this week’s event in Orlando.

“There was some optimism that Tiger might be able to play his event, the Hero World Challenge, but he was not quote tournament ready yet,” Lewis said.

“But I can tell you that he has been practicing and playing quite a bit at his home in South Florida alongside his son Charlie, and he has been ramping it up in the gym.”

TGL could be good for Tiger Woods

Over the past five years, Woods’ most significant issue has been walking 72 holes. However, in 2024, particularly during the early part of the major championships, the American didn’t look massively out of place. Yet, as the tournaments progressed, it was clear his body was failing him.

The TGL, however, provides Tiger with a chance to regain sharpness against the world’s best players without placing his body under too much strain. The innovative simulator league will test all aspects of Woods’ game and will hopefully allow him to gain a competitive edge, which was massively lacking in 2024.

Woods’ first TGL match is in week two as Jupiter Links Golf Club take on Los Angeles Golf Club at the SoFi Arena. With Woods unlikely to play any PGA Tour events during the first months of the season, the indoor league could be the only chance for fans to catch a glimpse of the 48-year-old until The Masters at the start of April.
