Tiger Woods is back in front of the media for the first time since the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon.

The 15-time major winner is recovering from yet another back surgery, and Woods won’t feature in this week’s Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

There’s a slim chance Woods could play the PNC Championship before Christmas, but right now, it’s unclear when a consistent return to professional golf will occur.

Woods, who is hosting this week’s event, addressed the media on Tuesday and provided an update on his game.

Speaking during his press conference, Woods admitted that he’s nowhere near sharp enough to compete with the world’s best players at this week’s lucrative event.

“I am still not there. These are 20 of the best players in the world. I’m not tournament-sharp… I’m not sharp enough to compete at this level.” Woods said. “I need to keep training to give myself the best chance at competing next year.”

“When I am ready to compete and play at this level, then I will.”

When will Tiger Woods play again?

The TGL, starting in January, is likely to be the first time Woods plays competitively since The Open.

The indoor series could provide Woods with a good chance to fine-tune his game without having to walk 18 holes, which has often been the problem in recent years.

Beyond the TGL, the Masters feels like the most likely event for Woods to return. The 48-year-old knows Augusta better than anyone and made the cut last year, having not played any competitive golf beforehand.

Competitive rounds are needed, and Woods’ latest update has dampened any optimism that he might be nearing a consistent PGA Tour return.
