The LIV Golf trading season is in full swing, and there’s been much speculation and rumour over recent weeks.

Tony Finau’s withdrawal from the Hero World Challenge saw strong links to the Saudi-backed league emerge. However, the six-time PGA Tour winner denied the rumours.

Adam Scott has also been linked to LIV, as have Viktor Hovland and Hideki Matsuyama previously. To date, no Jon Rahm-sized move has occurred ahead of the 2025 season, though.

Ongoing talks between the PIF and PGA Tour are no doubt taking a toll. Those players potentially tempted to take the LIV money are perhaps waiting for a more straightforward path to present itself should a merger agreement take place.

As a result, LIV team officials are being forced to look elsewhere.

John Catlin, who is a three-time DP World Tour winner, was a LIV Golf reserve during the 2024 season. The American was in contention to earn his way into the league after dominating the Asian Tour’s International Series.

But, after falling short at the final two events of the year, Catlin is now looking to win the LIV Golf Promotions event.

Another route for the 34-year-old involves being signed by one of the existing teams, and Catlin has revealed talks with multiple teams are ongoing.

“I have talked with a few teams, so we will have to see where that falls,” Catlin told Mirror Sports. One of the teams Catlin could well be in talks with is Legion XIII.

Captain Rahm is looking for a new signing, and Catlin recently posted a Legion XIII hat on his Instagram story.

John Catlin 2024 LIV Golf record

Catlin deputised on five occasions last season, most recently at the Team Championship in Dallas.

The American’s best finish came during the Nashville event, which Tyrrell Hatton won. Catlin’s lowest finish came at Greenbrier, where he placed T37. The 34-year-old’s performances were by no means disappointing, considering he’s not part of a regular team.

LIV Golf’s Promotions event this week provides Catlin with a chance to cement a spot in the league next season, and he’s motivated to become a permanent fixture. “I got a taste for what LIV Golf is all about so there is definitely a lot of motivation coming in [to this week’s event],” he said.

“I’m extremely hungry. It is such a cool format, a cool, innovative thing for golf. We have never seen anything quite like it, and after seeing it and getting a taste for it, that is where I want to be.”
