The inaugural TGL season has finally got underway, with plenty of drama and excitement having taken place on opening night.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil attended the TGL opener, with the competition only involving PGA Tour players.

The brainchild of Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, TGL brings together six teams representing six different cities.

A total of 24 PGA Tour players are set to be involved in the two-hour weekly competitions at Florida’s SoFi Center.

The Bay Golf Club eased past New York Golf Club 9-2 in match one, with Woods set to feature for Jupiter Links GC next week.

Wyndham Clark the slowest player on TGL opening night as shot clock timings emerge

Wyndham Clark thinks people will enjoy TGL, with the American having been involved in an opening night win for his team.

But it was 2023 US Open winner Clark who has taken the prize of the slowest player on the night, with TGL releasing the shot clock timings for all six stars involved.

Clark’s average time remaining on the shot clock was 15.85 seconds, with his teammates Shane Lowry and Ludvig Aberg having figures of 19.06 and 21.08 respectively.

That produced a team average of 18.7 for The Bay, with New York posting a figure of 21.19 as they came second on the night.

Matt Fitzpatrick was their slowest player with an average shot clock time remaining of 17.88 seconds, followed by the 21.53 of Rickie Fowler and 24.19 of Xander Schauffele.

Golf fans suggest shot clock change after TGL opening night

The 40-second shot clock is one of many features of the innovative league, with players facing a one-stroke penalty for overstepping the mark.

A handful of golf fans are, however, keen for the time limit to decrease in order to put the stars under further pressure.

“Shot clock needs to drop down to 30-25 secs!” one fan wrote on X, with a second commenting: “Let’s shorten it to 30 and put some pressure on!”

But other fans were satisfied with the rule, saying: “Proving players can move faster…” and “Loved the shot-clock aspect. I didn’t want this to be like going out and playing 18. This is gonna be such a different mindset and strategy for the players!”

There was, of course, a special mention for Clark given his timing, with fans noting: “Clark is the slowest player on the planet” and “LOL guys, you really don’t need to prove with stats that Wyndham Clark is the villain of the TGL.”
