Tommy Fleetwood has recently established himself as one of the world’s best golfers, and PGA Tour legend Fred Couples played a small part.

The Englishman had already won seven times on the DP World Tour and been a key part of the European Ryder Cup team before this season, so he was far from an up-and-coming player.

However, Fleetwood had never won on the PGA Tour despite contending at many events, and it had become one of the biggest storylines in professional golf.

Well, the 34-year-old finally succeeded at last week’s Tour Championship at East Lake, winning by three strokes over Russell Henley and Patrick Cantlay.

Fleetwood has since explained that one of his favorite clubs in his bag was recommended by Couples two years ago.

Tommy Fleetwood took inspiration from Fred Couples with mini driver

Tommy Fleetwood revealed that Fred Couples approached him at the 2023 Masters Tournament to brag about his new TaylorMade mini driver.

Fleetwood admitted that it looked nice and asked TaylorMade to try it out the following week at the RBC Heritage.

He fell in love with the club and has used it ever since, so much so that he is the player associated with starting the mini driver trend.

“So I was at The Masters in 2023, and Fred Couples was on the range with this Burner mini-driver,” Fleetwood explained. “Fred talks to everybody on the range at The Masters; he loves talking and hitting balls.

“He comes over to me, and he starts talking about this club. He says, ‘Have you tried this club? I’m going to hit this everywhere. It’s unbelievable.’

“I look at it like, ‘Yeah, that does look nice.’ I got one at Hilton Head the following week, and I hit it everywhere all week, and I was like, ‘This club is unbelievable.’

“So I’ve had one since then. I would actually have to give Fred Couples credit because he was the first one who used it, and I was probably number two.”

Fleetwood added that the “most underrated” aspect of his deal with TaylorMade is that he doesn’t ever have to worry about his golf bag.

“I must have signed with TaylorMade in 2021. Before that, I was using a lot of their clubs already, but I was a free agent, and I always enjoyed that.

“I could try whatever I wanted at times, but I didn’t know how good and important it is to have a company behind you that is constantly on top of your bag setup and clubs. I think that’s probably the most underrated thing about when players sign with a manufacturing company.

“There are lucrative deals out there, but I think having people take care of that for you is so undervalued. I’m so lucky my agent is unbelievable, and the whole team behind TaylorMade is amazing. I never have to worry about where my clubs are.”

Tommy Fleetwood’s new putter has helped massively

Fleetwood also made a change to his golf bag during the 2025 PGA Tour season that has helped him take his game to another level.

He started using the TaylorMade Spider putter at the Memorial Tournament in June, and since then, he has had four top-10 finishes in eight events.

“No, not in Atlanta. My bag setup is really, really good. I love the way my clubs flow at the moment. I’ve been using 14 TaylorMade clubs since Memorial.

“I’ve always chopped and changed with wedges and putters at times, but I’ve had 14 TaylorMade clubs and TaylorMade balls, so that’s been really clean.

“I did some work with James, our putter guy at TaylorMade, and we moved to a Spider at Hilton Head. I’ve putted really well since that. I think that’s been a really positive change.”
