Judging by the reactions on the first tee ahead of the final round at East Lake, there seemed to be little question that most in attendance wanted to see Tommy Fleetwood get across the line and win the Tour Championship.

Heading into the Tour Championship, it seemed to be one of the most baffling facts in golf that Tommy Fleetwood had still not won on the PGA Tour. The Englishman has been one of the world’s best players for some time, having finished in the top five in the majors on seven occasions.

Unfortunately, 2025 had been proving to be quite a painful season for the 34-year-old.

Fleetwood made a bogey on the final hole to lose the Travelers Championship to Keegan Bradley. Meanwhile, he had a fantastic chance to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship at the start of the playoffs.

While there were concerns about what was missing from Fleetwood’s game to prevent him from getting the job done, he received plenty of plaudits for the way he handled those agonising finishes.

Fleetwood was lauded for speaking to the media at TPC River Highlands and TPC Southwind. On both occasions, he seemed determined to take the positives and learn for the next time he put himself in contention.

And following his victory at East Lake where he seemed to be the fan favourite, Fleetwood suggested on the Fore Play Podcast that he was taken aback by the support he received in recent months.

“The overriding feeling was so positive throughout it all. Of course, you’re going to get the few negative comments and doubt is going to creep in throughout and things like that. I think what I didn’t have an appreciation of, because every time I came off, and especially in recent times when I’d lost the tournaments that I feel like I should have won – Travelers, Keegan finished great, and I let that one slip, but Keegan still finished great, Memphis, when it looked like it was mine, J.J. and Justin finished great and I finished poorly – but when I came off, straight away my feeling is you’ve got to be positive. I’ll be honest and say I’m gutted and I feel pretty rough right now and it hurts, but my initial reaction is to find positives in it and know that I want to get there,” he said.

“I don’t think I realised how much people appreciated it or people liked that. And I think people loved the story for that reason. I think the coolest thing was how it finished in Atlanta, I managed to get that win in Atlanta, it just crescendoed there which was the perfect way for it to go.”

The floodgates could open for Tommy Fleetwood after his win at the Tour Championship

There is every reason to think that Fleetwood’s win at the Tour Championship is going to open the doors to so much success.

He is up to sixth in the world rankings while he is a player with 31 top five finishes on the PGA Tour across his career. The number in his wins column stateside does not do justice to the quality of his game.

With the knowledge that he can indeed get the job done against the best players on the planet, it is hard to know what can stop Fleetwood from making up for lost time in the years to come.
