Jason Day made a big splash on the golf equipment scene this week at the Bank of Utah Championship.
Day debuted his new irons featuring graphite shafts at the Bank of Utah Championship
It’s fair to suggest that Day’s club change at the Bank of Utah Championship could actually prolong his time at the top of the game.
Day still has the ambition to compete on the PGA Tour for another 13 years and the lighter 110-gram shafts will definitely help him do just that.
A PGA Tour player using graphite shafts is extremely uncommon, although more seem to be making the switch now than in years gone by.
However, there is something else really interesting about Day’s bag setup this week, perhaps even more so than the fact that he’s switched to graphite shafted irons.
The craziest thing about Jason Day’s bag setup at the Utah Championship
Day has been solid at the Black Desert Resort this week, if not spectacular.
He has carded rounds of 68, 72 and 67 to leave him in a tie for 46th heading into the final round of the Utah Championship.

However, Day is sporting something highly unusual this week.
The Australian’s bag setup consists of only 13 clubs, when 14 are permitted by the rules of golf.
That is a highly unusual decision. Why would you limit yourself to 13 clubs, something which could put you at a distinct disadvantage?
Choosing whether to drop a wedge, a long iron or a lofted fairway wood out of the bag to ensure that the 14-club limit is adhered to is hard enough as it is.
Day only carrying 13 clubs at the Bank of Utah Championship has surely just made things unnecessarily harder for him.
The reason why Jason Day is only using 13 clubs in Utah
Perhaps Day wanted to take indecision completely out of his game when trialling his new irons.
Something still doesn’t ring true, though.
Day did explain why he is only carrying 13 clubs this week:
“Right now I think we’re in the testing phase,” Day said. “You know, we still got to get the gappings right, have to get the spins right, so obviously that is going to be more testing coming up for me.”
So the Australian is not entirely set on the loft gaps between his irons. They may well be too spaced out right now, so 13 clubs is enough for him this week.
However, that would surely mean he has been in between yardages a lot throughout his rounds?
I would be hugely surprised if Day turns up at his next PGA Tour event with 13 clubs in his bag.
