Jason Day is without a major championship victory in a decade and the fact that he has won just one major is a big surprise in itself, given his talent.

Day has actually been genuinely in contention to win a major championship only once since 2019 – his T-2 finish at the 2023 Open.

Back in August, Day insisted he wants to play on the PGA Tour until he’s 50, but taking his injury problems into account, that may prove to be difficult for him.

Before the start of the 2025 PGA Tour season in January, Day suggested his game was in great shape, but he has gone on to endure a challenging year to say the least.

He has just four top-10 finishes to his name in 16 events so far in 2025.

The Australian is currently playing in the Bank of Utah Championship, and he has so far posted rounds of 68 and 72 on the par-71 layout.

Nothing to get too excited about there, but something Day decided to do before the tournament at the Black Desert Resort got underway could be hugely significant for him moving forward.

Jason Day’s decision could help him become a force at majors again

If the 37-year-old is fully healthy, he has the ability to compete with anyone on the PGA Tour.

However, maintaining his fitness has been hugely problematic for him over the past 5-10 years.

The Australian once opened up on just how much his back and wrist injuries affected him.

He said: “It felt like a chore.

“It didn’t feel enjoyable to me to play golf, not only injured, but to play golf for the wrong reasons.

“There was no love and passion, I was thinking, ‘Am I finally getting close to racking up the clubs?’

“If I didn’t make the changes body-wise and swing-wise, I think there would be potential for me not playing again.

Now, he has made a big decision regarding his equipment, and it could really help him moving forward.

Day decided to change irons ahead of the Bank of Utah Championship in the desert this week.

However, it wasn’t just any old change that he made; Day went the whole hog concerning his switch of irons.

Why Jason Day’s new irons could prolong his PGA Tour career

Day’s irons have 110-gram graphite shafts. That is a big decrease from the 130-gram shafts he used to have in his bag.

Lighter irons should lead to less stress on the lower back for Day and he is clearly going down a route of trying to prolong his career.

However, it will all be about contending in the majors again for the Australian, not simply just making cuts and securing top-10 finishes here and there on the PGA Tour.

Having lighter irons means there will be less strain on Day’s body in general throughout the entirety of his rounds.

That said, the proof will be in the pudding for Day moving forward. Even if his new irons do help him prolong his career, will he be able to hang with the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, and even some of the young stars coming out on the PGA Tour?

Only time will tell in that regard.
