Shane Lowry stepped up his preparation for the 2025 Ryder Cup at the Irish Open last week.

The 38-year-old joined European teammates Rory McIlroy and Tyrrell Hatton at The K Club ahead of the Ryder Cup later this month.

Of course, Lowry wanted to win the tournament in front of his home crowd, but he definitely had one eye on Bethpage Black.

He even admitted after the final round of the Irish Open that he had been speaking to playing partner Thomas Detry about it.

Shane Lowry tips Europe for greatness at the Ryder Cup

Lowry was part of the European team that beat the United States in Rome two years ago and is determined to win again in New York.

Even though he realises that winning a Ryder Cup away from home is so difficult, he fully believes that Europe can do it.

He told Detry on Sunday at the Irish Open that they have “an amazing opportunity” to upset the United States in their own backyard.

“I think, when we get to Wentworth next week, is when it’s going to start getting exciting,” Lowry said. “We’re all going to be there: players, caddies, and everyone. We have a dinner next week that we’re all going to. That’s going to be the start of it.

“Then, obviously, when you get on the plane to go for your practice trip, then you’re really into it. Thomas and I were actually talking about it today; he was asking me about it.

“I was saying, ‘I think we’ve got an amazing opportunity to do something great here, and if we were to win the Ryder Cup, I think it would be one of the greatest wins of all time.’

“I think that carrot dangling there for all of us is something that we’ll wake up every morning over the next few weeks and put as much effort as we can into achieving that goal.”

Shane Lowry’s record at the Ryder Cup

Lowry made his Ryder Cup debut in 2021 and could not prevent Europe from being thrashed by the United States at Whistling Straits.

He lost to Tony Finau and Harris English alongside Rory McIlroy before beating the same duo with Tyrrell Hatton.

In the Sunday singles, Lowry lost 4&2 to Patrick Cantlay as Europe fell to an embarrassing defeat to Steve Stricker’s team.
