Scottie Scheffler will once again head to East Lake with a lead as he looks to finally land golf’s most lucrative prize.

The world number one has held the lead heading to Atlanta for the past two years but has failed to get over the line at the end-of-season finale.

Scheffler is coming off an indifferent performance at the BMW Championship, where he finished tied for 33rd and one over for the tournament. Scheffler completely lost his head during the second round, leading to suggestions that the American may need the off-season break.

Yet, the Tour Championship looms, and the two-time Masters champion must raise his levels one more time for this week’s event in Atlanta.

After the FedEx Cup top 30 were finalised upon the conclusion of the BMW Championship. Scheffler will head start the Tour Championship with a two-shot lead over Xander Schauffele.

And the world number one has admitted it’s a “weird” feeling.

“Yeah, just staying patient overall, treating it like I would any other tournament,” Scheffler explained. “It’s weird starting off with a lead. I’ll either be in first or second, depending on how today shakes out.

“I know I’ll be in contention going into next week, and I just have to go out there and do my thing and compete. I’ve got a great chance to win the tournament next week, and I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’ve got some great players behind me, and it should be some fun competition.”

Scottie Scheffler looking to benefit from East Lake changes

East Lake will look very different compared to this time 12 months ago. Major renovations have taken place across the course, including new bunkering and green complexes.

Schauffele wanted East Lake to remain the same, whereas Scheffler is excited about the changes given his poor record on the prior set-up.

The Tour Championship is currently a big blot on Scheffler’s record, and it’s a title he will be desperate to add to his glittering resume this week.

He must get back to basics, and his cool and calm demeanour will be vital if he is to halt Schauffele’s advances in Atlanta.
