Scottie Scheffler has confirmed his status as the world’s best golfer after being named the PGA Tour Player of the Year for the 2024 season.

Rory McIlroy was nominated for Player of the Year, along with Scheffler’s fellow American Xander Schauffele.

But it was the world number one who perhaps unsurprisingly emerged victorious, with Scheffler having won seven PGA Tour titles in 2024.

He also clinched the gold medal at the Paris Olympics and won the season-long FedExCup title in a truly sensational season.

Scheffler amassed 727.5 ranking points in 2024, joining Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh as the only players to move over the 700 figure in a single season.

And he has now followed Woods once more, with Scheffler joining him as the only player to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year award in three consecutive seasons.

Woods earned the honour in five successive seasons from 1999-2003 and again in three successive seasons in 2005-07.

The current holder, 11-time winner Woods and three-time winner McIlroy are the only players to clinch the honour three times or more.

What did PGA Tour Player of the Year Scottie Scheffler achieve in 2024?

It is perhaps easier to look at the trophies that Scheffler didn’t lift in 2024, such were his stunning efforts on the course.

The American, who has occupied the world number one spot since May 21, 2023, took his PGA Tour titles tally to 13 in 2024.

He won The Players, The Masters and the Tour Championship, along with victories at the Signature Events of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage, the Memorial Tournament and the Travelers Championship.

It was the first time a player won seven or more times since Woods in 2007, with Scheffler doing his utmost to fend off the inevitable comparisons.

“I saw it a lot growing up,” said Scheffler, as quoted by the PGA Tour website. “You know, I can remember when Jordan (Spieth) had his season in I think it was 2015 and he won a bunch of times and people were comparing him to Tiger Woods. There’s really only one Tiger, that’s just kind of it.”
