Rory McIlroy has ended his 2024 season on a high by being nominated for the 2024 PGA Tour Player of the Year award.

McIlroy won his sixth Race to Dubai title after emerging victorious at the DP World Tour Championship earlier this month.

The four-time major champion joined the legendary Seve Ballesteros in the all-time Race to Dubai list, and is now just two titles behind leader Colin Montgomerie.

It represented a fourth success of the season for McIlroy, who has now been recognised by the PGA Tour for his impressive year.

American stars Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele are also up for the PGA Tour Player of the Year award following their stunning seasons on the course.

Golf fans not happy after Rory McIlroy’s PGA Tour Player of the Year nomination

The duo won three of the four major championships, with neither Scheffler nor Schauffele missing a PGA Tour cut.

Golf fans have been reacting to the nominations, with many of the opinion that McIlroy should not be involved.

One took to X to write: “What is Rory doing there? It’s a two-horse race,” with others saying: “Rory for what? Showing up” and “Why even include Rory or Xander?”

Another commented: “Was Rory even that great this year on the tour? He played elite golf over a 4-week period and that was it.”

And another McIlroy sceptic said: “I’m guessing Rory didn’t even want to be a nominee against those two. Tough look.”

There were also calls for other inclusions, with one fan questioning: “Bob MacIntyre invisible or something?”

And another wrote: “A little surprised to see Hideki [Matsuyama] isn’t nominated for POTY. Obviously it’s between Xander and Scottie this year but would’ve been nice to see him up there. Rory had a great year but I’m not really sure what he did better than Hideki.”

Scottie Scheffler deserves PGA Tour Player of the Year award

Golf fans can debate who should and shouldn’t have made the cut for some time, but the only real issue worth discussing is just how special Scheffler’s season was.

Schauffele has pushed him all the way, with the American winning the PGA Championship and The Open Championship, with a total of 15 top 10s.

But Scheffler was on another level, registering a PGA Tour-best 16 top 10s as he won seven titles throughout 2024.

They include the Masters and the FedExCup, with the small matter of a gold medal also going his way at the Paris Olympics.

McIlroy, in comparison, won twice on the PGA Tour as he narrowly missed out on the US Open title, with seven top 10s secured.
