Russell Henley’s missed putt on the 18th hole at Bethpage Black will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

Henley had a chance to beat Shane Lowry in the Sunday singles and keep the United States’ hopes of winning the Ryder Cup alive.

Unfortunately for the US team, his weak putt did not reach the hole, and Lowry followed it up by making his to tie the match.

The half point took Team Europe to 14, ensuring they had retained the Ryder Cup after winning two years ago in Rome.

Henley will regret not giving his putt a better roll, and he was understandably disappointed when he spoke about it afterwards.

Russell Henley reacts to missing a crucial putt against Shane Lowry at the Ryder Cup

Russell Henley played well against one of Europe’s toughest competitors, Shane Lowry, and can be proud of his efforts.

Henley will be so upset that he did not win his singles match, which would have given the US more hope of completing an epic comeback.

Still, the USA really lost the Ryder Cup by making too many mistakes on Friday and Saturday, so he should not be too hard on himself.

“Yeah, I played well,” Henley said. “Definitely felt the nerves coming down the stretch. I’ve never felt nerves quite like that. It was quite an experience, quite an atmosphere.

“Very disappointed with the way I finished, leaving those putts short, but I gave it to myself, and hopefully I learned from it.”

Russell Henley shares a positive takeaway from the Ryder Cup

Henley was asked to share a positive takeaway from his Ryder Cup debut at Bethpage Black despite the US team’s defeat.

He spoke highly about the “camaraderie” within the United States locker room, which has often been questioned from the outside.

“Just the camaraderie from the team. The team is an unbelievable thing to be able to play on a team, and I feel like I’ve gotten closer to these guys.

“They’ve supported me through thick and thin. It’s just awesome. It’s a great feeling.”

Henley had an excellent 2025 season on the PGA Tour, even climbing to third in the world rankings, so hopefully he can build on that going forward.
