Shane Lowry was the European hero at the Ryder Cup, holing the putt that helped his side to retain the trophy.

Lowry tied his singles match with Russell Henley at Bethpage Black, but it was enough to take Team Europe to the all-important 14-point mark.

It arrived amid a stunning fightback from the USA, who fell just short of one of the best Ryder Cup recoveries of all-time.

Lowry loves representing Europe at the Ryder Cup, with those feelings made clear by his jubilant celebrations on the 18th green.

His opponent Henley had the chance to continue the American fightback, but he missed his putt before Lowry held his nerve to hole out.

What Shane Lowry said to his caddie just before sealing the Ryder Cup for Europe

The Irishman was relaxed as he watched the remaining matches, but his emotions were at an all-time high in the immediate aftermath of his crucial half-point.

He said right after: “I have been so lucky to experience amazing things in this game. That was the hardest couple of hours of my whole life.

“I can’t believe it. I can’t believe that putt went in. I said to Darren [Reynolds] walking down 18 that I have a chance to do the coolest thing of my life here.

“The Ryder Cup means everything to me. I won the Open in Ireland, it’s amazing and a dream come true.

“But the Ryder Cup is amazing. To do that on the 18th green in front of everyone it’s like, it was so hard out there.

“Fair play to the US lads, we knew they would come out fighting but I just hope one of the boys can get a half point so we can get the win. We have retained the cup but want to win as well.”

Shane Lowry shares verdict on Luke Donald after helping Europe retain the Ryder Cup

A packed Bethpage Black crowd looked on as Lowry and Henley ended their thrilling battle in dramatic fashion, with European captain Luke Donald in attendance.

And he was among those congratulating the Irishman on his efforts, with Lowry quick to praise Donald for what he’s done in the competition.

“He is the greatest captain who has ever lived,” Lowry said of Donald. “The most amazing man in the world. He has done the best job. I don’t know what to say.”

Lowry was unsurprisingly overcome with emotion after getting the job done for Europe, who narrowly avoided one of the worst collapses in Ryder Cup history.

They entered Sunday’s singles session with a seemingly unassailable 11.5-4.5 lead over Keegan Bradley’s USA.

But by the time Lowry drained his putt, that lead had remarkably been cut to 14-11, with three matches remaining at that stage.
