Rory McIlroy doesn’t look like winding his year down anytime soon, with the world number three set for a highly-anticipated PGA Tour versus LIV Golf clash.
McIlroy wants to reduce his schedule next season, with the Northern Irishman having endured a long and often challenging 2024 so far.
But he has added an event to his year, with McIlroy set to play alongside Scottie Scheffler against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in December.
The made-for-TV contest pits two PGA Tour stars against two LIV Golf aces, with the clash set to take place in Las Vegas.
Justin Rose says the match is good for golf, with fans certain to be intrigued by the play and indeed the potential deeper meaning behind the match.

Rory McIlroy shares his honest thoughts on his LIV Golf match with Scottie Scheffler
McIlroy has now shared his own thoughts on the upcoming match, which takes place amid ongoing discussions between the PGA Tour and the PIF, which funds LIV Golf.
“I think for the players it’s a way to try to capitalise on everything that’s been going on,” McIlroy told UTV Live News.
“For golf to be as strong as it can be, we need all the best players playing against each other more often, and not just the four times a year at the majors.
“So if this match can sort of help along the way, trying to get people back together, hopefully that’s a good thing.”
Will Rory McIlroy discuss the PGA Tour and LIV Golf with Bryson DeChambeau?
The PGA Tour and LIV Golf reached a framework agreement last summer, but Rose says news on a deal is ‘slow forthcoming’.
It means players across both tours remain in the dark about what the future of golf will look like, which isn’t a good look for the sport in general.
But the match-up between McIlroy and Scheffler and DeChambeau and Koepka could be seen as a positive sign.
It remains to be seen if the foursome will discuss the rival tours while out on the course, but the topic is certain to arise in and around the event.
Bragging rights will undoubtedly be at stake in Las Vegas, with McIlroy versus DeChambeau just one of the many intriguing side issues at play after their US Open battle at Pinehurst.
Smylie Kaufman thinks DeChambeau will mention LIV during the head-to-head match, with the latter’s recent ongoing feud with Koepka another fascinating issue at play.
