The ongoing battle between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf has taken a very interesting turn after a handful of their top stars announced a head-to-head match.

PGA Tour icons Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will team up to take on LIV Golf aces Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in December.

Golf fans are split about the Las Vegas clash, in what could represent the beginning of some form of collaboration between the two tours.

The PGA Tour and LIV Golf reached a framework agreement last summer, but very little progress has been made on what a final deal may look like.

But seemingly taking matters into their own hands are four of the world’s top players, who will go head-to-head in a highly-anticipated encounter at the end of the year.

Justin Rose excited by Scottie Scheffler’s match vs Bryson DeChambeau

Followers of both tours will undoubtedly be tuning in, along with several players across the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

Giving his approval of the event is major champion Justin Rose, who told Sky Sports: “Give the people what they want. I think that’s going to be compelling, good viewing.

“I think obviously four great names in the sport of golf, four players that have obviously been huge in major championships in the last sort of five to 10 years.

“I think it’s going to be exciting, obviously a little bit of needle to it as well. There has been a lot said about PGA Tour and LIV.

“Listen, I think it’s going to be fun and I think that’s a nice way of beginning to see everybody come back together whatever that means, but also to compete against each other I think is a really compelling bit of TV.”

Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy lead the way for majors among the foursome

The four big-names involved certainly know each other well, having often come face-to-face in individual and team events over the years.

And they also know what it takes to compete and indeed win major events, although this one clearly won’t be as important as the likes of the majors.

But the current stand-off between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf makes it an intriguing encounter, as does each player’s hunger for success.

Pride could also be at stake, with McIlroy having been an ardent supporter of his tour amid the LIV Golf defections.

It is incidentally Koepka who has most major wins among the foursome with five, followed by the four of McIlroy, with Scheffler and DeChambeau both on two.

It is however, the latter duo who have won most recently on the big stage, with Scheffler clinching the Masters this year, followed by DeChambeau at the US Open.

The announcement for the match interestingly came not long after McIlroy said he wants to play fewer tournaments in 2025.
