Rory McIlroy was involved in a freak incident during the first round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Playing his approach to the par-five 12th, McIlroy saw the end of his clubhead snap off at impact. Despite the broken club, the Northern Irishman’s approach was pinpoint and set up a short eagle putt.
And speaking after his first round at Wentworth, McIlroy admitted he had no idea where his ball had gone.
Rory McIlroy stunned by what he did at the BMW PGA Championship
McIlroy initially admitted the incident reminded him of something similar which happened to Ludvig Aberg earlier in the season.
“I couldn’t even see. I lost the ball. I didn’t have a clue,” The Northern Irishman told Sky Sports after his first 18 at the BMW PGA Championship. “[The shot] was unbelievable. It reminded me of Ludvig’s when his driver head came off this year, and he hit it close.”
McIlroy continued: “But I was just thankful the ball went where I wanted it to, and thankfully, the lads were on hand to fix it for me, and I got it back on the 16th. I don’t know if it was going from hot conditions to cold conditions; that can happen.”
Fast start for Rory McIlroy at Wentworth
McIlroy was always going to play the BMW PGA Championship, and the four-time major winner is off to a fast start.
McIlroy is five under and firmly in contention heading into Friday’s second round at the famous Surrey venue.
The Northern Irishman is looking to bounce back after last week’s heartache at the Irish Open. McIlroy missed an eagle putt on the 18th to add yet another near-miss to his 2024 resume.
Bouncing back at the DP World Tour’s flagship event would be the perfect response ahead of the 35-year-old taking an extended break from the game.
