Rory McIlroy explains what was odd about his double bogey on the first hole in the final round of The Masters

Rory McIlroy can finally call himself a winner of The Masters, having just clinched the green jacket at Augusta National.

Tiger Woods has congratulated McIlroy after he triumphed at the major championship, securing the career grand slam in the process.

Butch Harmon says Woods didn’t go through what McIlroy did during his Sunday at Augusta, which involved a playoff with Justin Rose.

McIlroy had a putt to win The Masters on the 18th, but his miss resulted in a sudden-death playoff with Englishman Rose.

Repeating the 18th hole, the Northern Irishman carded a birdie as Rose made par, thus finally ending McIlroy’s lengthy wait for success at The Masters.

Speaking after the success, the champion was able to look back on his round, which started in disastrous fashion.

“When I hit the wedge shot into the creek on 13 I felt like I did a really good job of bouncing back from that and the double bogey at the first as well,” he said on Sky Sports Golf.

“I was really nervous going out and it was almost as if the double bogey at the first calmed my nerves a little bit and sort of got me into it in a funny way.

“I just think all week how I responded to setback is what I will take from this week. I could not be more proud of myself for how I responded to that and bouncing back when I needed to.”

The five-time major champion should be able to take a lot from his week, both from a mental and physical perspective.

In a simply unforgettable day at Augusta, the tides constantly turned, with the champion having started his Sunday two shots ahead.

But a double bogey on the par four first allowed his playing partner Bryson DeChambeau to sneak ahead, only for the LIV Golf star to fail to capitalise.

Then looking comfortable and heading for the green jacket, McIlroy found water on the par five 15th, where he posted another double bogey.
