Rory McIlroy has joined an exclusive list of players who have gone down in golfing history, having just won the career grand slam at The Masters.

McIlroy is honoured to have won The Masters, which he did via a playoff against Justin Rose at Augusta National.

Phil Mickelson has congratulated McIlroy on his success, with the latter having now won all four major championships.

McIlroy has completed the set with The Masters, having also won the US Open, The Open Championship and the PGA Championship twice.

He joins Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods in completing the stunning feat.

The Northern Irishman missed a chance to win the tournament in regulation, with his wayward putt forcing a playoff with Rose.

But McIlroy recovered to clinch a birdie on the first playoff hole as the Englishman carded a par, thus ending the former’s major-winning drought.

Also reacting to his success were recent PGA Tour champion Min Woo Lee and eight-time PGA Tour winner Billy Horschel.

The former, who finished 49th, posted on Instagram: “Thank you, Augusta National. A pleasure and honour to be walking the fairways of so much history.

“Can’t wait to be back here again at the best place on Earth. Huge congrats to Rory McIlroy, truly deserving. A grand slam is just crazy. Don’t stop believing.

The latter meanwhile, having missed the cut, also referenced the record-equalling feat, writing on X: “History!! Well done Rory! Well done!”

It was another roller-coaster major championship for McIlroy, who was often his own worst enemy at Augusta.

He made his 17th start at The Masters this week, and was making an 11th attempt at winning all four majors.

But that burden has now been lifted from his shoulders, with the Northern Irishman having been under huge pressure to finally get over the line.
