Rory McIlroy and Bryson De Chambeau went out in the last group for the final round of The Masters at Augusta National on Sunday.

The 89th edition of The Masters has been one of the most enthralling golf tournaments to watch over the past decade, from start to finish.

And Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau have both played major parts in that.

Augusta National never disappoints does it? It is a magical place that oozes nostalgia, and it produces the goods year, after year, after year.

The stage was set on Sunday afternoon for two of the best players in the world to go head-to-head.

After his third round on Saturday, Rory McIlroy said he needed to stop missing greens on the short side on day four of The Masters.

And in fairness to him, he did well in that regard. After his terrible start, the Northern Irishman fired himself back into contention with birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes.

At the time of writing, Rory led Bryson by three shots after eight holes of the final round.

But what player were the patrons at Augusta cheering for more?

Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau showdown at The Masters produced clear fan favourite

Rory and Bryson are two of the most popular players in the game.

And when they teed off at 2:30 PM ET on Sunday afternoon, the eyes of the golfing world were focused firmly on both of them.

The patrons at Augusta National were pumped up to say the least.

And Rich Beem and Wayne Riley discussed which player out of the two was getting more love from the spectators, during live coverage on Sky Sports in the UK:

Beem: From what it sounds like the cheers are a bit more in Rory’s favour.

Riley: Absolutely.

That proves just how popular Rory McIlroy is, even in the USA. He’s pure box office, and there surely isn’t anyone who would begrudge him joining the Grand Slam club.

Rory McIlroy set to equal 90-year record at Augusta

If Rory does go on to win The Masters, he will become the first player to complete the Grand Slam at The Masters.

The last player to do that was Gene Sarazen at Augusta way back in 1935.

Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Ben Hogan are the other players who’ve won all four Major Championships.

What an achievement it would be for the Northern Irishman to join that elite group of names.

If Rory McIlroy manages to get the better of Bryson DeChambeau at The Masters on Sunday, it will be the crowning moment of his career to date.
