Rory McIlroy heads into The PGA Championship as one of the standout favourites to win the second major of the year.
McIlroy has been the best player on the PGA Tour in 2025 so far, with three huge wins to his name at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The PLAYERS Championship and The Masters.
And now he will have his eyes set on winning The PGA Championship at Quail Hollow this week.
McIlroy holds the course record at Quail Hollow, and he will be very confident of getting the job done.
However, Brandel Chamblee suggested on Monday that Scottie Scheffler is actually the biggest favourite to win The PGA Championship.

Former PGA champion Mark Brooks said that Scheffler is a better player than McIlroy when both have their ‘A’ games.
However, something has happened this week that might just give the Northern Irishman the edge over his American rival.
Rory McIlroy claimed to have had great news ahead of The PGA Championship
There has been a deluge of rain at Quail Hollow over the past couple of days, and the adverse weather is set to continue right up to the start of the tournament.
Paul McGinley was speaking on the Golf Channel’s preview of the PGA Championship about McIlroy’s chances of winning.
And McGinley pointed out how the wet golf course will be perfect for The Masters champion, given his length off the tee.
He said, “I think this is going to be a good week to find out where he is at in his head. He is coming back at a golf course that he has had four successes on before. He is really comfortable here. He loves this golf course. The course is really set up for him.

“In 2024 arguably the greatest golf he has ever played in his career he played here in 2024 winning according to the statistics. He was phenomenal and then he got the pointy elbows out on Xander in the last round. That was vintage Rory. One of the best performances I have ever seen from him was winning here last year.
“Now it has rained – it absolutely bucketed it down today and yesterday and we are going to have a bit more rain the next two days. A soft golf course is generally a golf course which suits him so there are a lot of things in his favour. He has the wind in his sails after completing the Grand Slam. This could be a bit of a window in what the future is going to hold for Rory. What is he going to do with all the odds in his favour? Lots of confidence in the bank. What is he going to do this week? That will give us a bit of an indication of what to expect from Rory not just for the rest of the year but going forward.“
There is no doubt that a soft, wet golf course will play right into McIlroy’s hands, but only if he drives the ball straight for the most part.
Thick, gnarly, wet rough and wayward driving is definitely not a good combination.
Rory McIlroy’s 2025 driving stats on the PGA Tour
McIlroy is widely regarded as one of the best drivers of the ball in the game.
However, his lack of accuracy off the tee is definitely something that he needs to work on.
| Statistical category | McIlroy’s 2025 ranking |
| Driving distance rank | 3rd |
| Driving Accuracy | 175th |
| Strokes gained off the tee | 1st |
| Total driving | 82nd |
| Total driving efficiency | 88th |
There is clearly a huge discrepancy between McIlroy’s length off the tee and his accuracy.
If he is to win at Quail Hollow, one would imagine that he will need to find more fairways than he misses this week.
That said, his strength should enable him to escape from tough lies in the rough with minimal damage done.
McIlroy will undoubtedly be one of the big storylines at The PGA Championship this week, even if he doesn’t end up winning.
