So who would win out of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, if both have their A games?
It goes without saying that Scheffler and McIlroy are the best two golfers on the planet right now.
Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas are in scintillating form as well.
And everything seems to be set up perfectly for a hugely exciting PGA Championship.
McIlroy admitted that it was hard not to notice how dominant Scheffler was last season, when the Texan won nine tournaments, including his Olympics triumph.

And then Scheffler said McIlroy’s Masters win inspired him to work even harder on his game.
And the two best golfers on the PGA Tour, and indeed the world, are now on a collision course heading into the second major of the season.
Former PGA Champion chooses between Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy
It would surprise nobody if the American and the Northern Irishman are battling it out for the Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday.
Scheffler dominated McIlroy in almost every single event last year, but it has been the 35-year-old’s turn this season.
And with The PGA Championship now just three days away, both players will be really ramping up their preparations for the tournament at Quail Hollow.
Mark Brooks – The PGA Championship winner at Valhalla way back in 1996 – was a guest on the 5 Clubs podcast on Monday, and picked who he thinks is the best player out of Scheffler and McIlroy.

He said, “Scottie’s my pick. I mean, at this moment in time, I mean, it’s a great rivalry that’s brewing, between him and Rory.
“Scottie and Rory, they’re wildly different people. Wildly different, which I think makes it even more compelling.
“But Scottie’s the favourite right now. Scottie’s A game beats Rory’s A game right now.”
That’s a bold call from Brooks. I would say that Scheffler is far more consistent than McIlroy.
However, it definitely could be argued that the 35-year-old’s A game is slightly better than the two-time Masters champion’s.
Scheffler vs McIlroy by numbers
The 2025 season has been dominated by McIlroy, although Scheffler seems to be peaking at just the right time.
Here’s how their results stack up against each other:
| 2025 PGA Tour results | Scheffler | McIlroy |
| Events played | 9 | 8 |
| Wins | 1 | 3 |
| Top-10s | 6 | 5 |
| Top-25s | 9 | 8 |
| Missed cuts | 0 | 0 |
Those stats prove just how good both players are.
It is quite frankly ridiculous that Scheffler and McIlroy have finished inside the top 25 in every single event they have played.
The PGA Tour has the very best golfers on the planet playing week in, week out, and it is a remarkable example of the consistency that they have both shown this season.
And if you had to pick a winner at Quail Hollow this week, you would be pretty safe in opting for either of those two.
