Wyndham Clark was among the players left frustrated during the PGA Championship, with his emotions reaching boiling point in the final round.

Golf fans criticised Clark after he fired his driver into the advertising boards on the 16th tee box, breaking his club in the process.

His fellow PGA Tour player Max Homa also threw his club in frustration, while Shane Lowry was angered by a reporter and smashed his club into the ground as one of his shots found a pitch mark.

Many high-profile players missed the cut in a tricky test at Quail Hollow, which was made more challenging by the weather.

Mud balls caused players problems in the early stages of the PGA Championship, with the North Carolina course having experienced heavy rainfall before the event started.

Peter Finch says if Wyndham Clark should be punished for PGA Championship club throw

But 2023 US Open champion Clark has come under particular scrutiny for his actions, with Peter Finch now giving his take on the club throw.

Speaking on The Rough Cut Golf Podcast, he said: “I think it was Wyndham Clark who turned around and launched his driver.

“If it causes damage or it’s deemed as ungentlemanly conduct, you can get fined for that. So the same with swearing.

“If you are caught swearing you will get fined. They do get punished. It doesn’t come to the fore that often.

“Because the amounts of money are not huge for these guys and it has kind of become commonplace. The amount of fines that Tyrrell [Hatton] racked up in the last year of the DP World Tour was unbelievable.

“I don’t know – I am a little bit on the fence about it. If you damage the course. Like Shane when he was in that pitch mark and he hit that shot he absolutely attacked the fairway.

“That is damaging the course outside of what needs to be done. If he got punished for that I don’t know, but I can understand the frustrations.

“Golf is so annoying at times, it’s so frustrating. Sometimes you just want to smack something and every now and again to let it out. I don’t have a massive issue with it.

“It depends if you keep on doing it and keep on doing it, that’s just when you look an idiot. Every now and again, people throw clubs, it’s fine. There are more problems going on in the world.”

Wyndham Clark, Max Homa and Shane Lowry frustrated at PGA Championship

It certainly wasn’t a good look for the likes of Clark, Homa and Lowry, who will regret their outbursts from Quail Hollow.

Clark has apologised for his club throw, which was particularly dangerous given it took place on the tee box, as opposed to the fairway incidents of the other two.

Perhaps Scottie Scheffler has provided inspiration in more ways than one after coming out on top, with the world number one more often than not able to keep his cool.

He lifted the trophy at Quail Hollow as Clark finished T50 and Homa finished T60, with Lowry not even making the cut.
