The Presidents Cup gets underway this week and unlike most of the previous editions of the tournament, there’ll be no Tiger Woods present.

Woods has featured in nine different Presidents Cup teams and was last seen as a playing captain back in 2019 as the USA won out 16-14.

This time, Team USA has Jim Furyk at the helm and a talented bunch of players to go head to head with the International Team over in Montreal.

There is a feeling that this time around it won’t all be plain sailing for Team USA – they’ve only ever lost one Presidents Cup – and without a presence like Tiger, an element of aura is missing.

Of course, Tiger’s best days have been and gone really but his impact on the sport is still huge.

And one player playing in Montreal, Patrick Cantlay, has been speaking about the idea of playing alongside Woods and his record in general in tournament golf.

Patrick Cantlay speaks about playing with Tiger Woods

Speaking to the press ahead of this week’s Presidents Cup getting underway, Cantlay was asked about playing with Tiger if he got the chance.

And like most golfers, Cantlay says he’d have jumped at the chance.

“I’m not sure. He’s had good pairings with Strick. He has good records, winning records, I think, in both Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups.

“If you have winning records in this thing, then you’re doing well. I didn’t get the opportunity, but I would have loved to have played with Tiger.

“Anytime you have the best player of a generation on your team, I think it’s a good pairing.”

What is Tiger Woods’ record in the Presidents Cup?

Few players have a record like Tiger in the Presidents Cup and it’s easy to see why he’s been such a key component for the US over the years.

As well as being the youngest ever captain of the team in 2019, Woods has also won the most matches in the tournament’s history at 27 – one more than Phil Mickelson.

In singles competition, Woods has won a whopping seven of his nine matches at the Presidents, losing just twice.

His record in the foursomes is also brilliant, with 12 wins, four losses and a single shared match to show from 17 attempts.

So while the new breed is rising in golf, Tiger Woods’ records are still there to be got at by the younger generation.
