Many golf fans will be on tenterhooks at this year’s Presidents Cup to see if Scottie Scheffler will be able to put his previous performance at the event behind him and play like the world number one at Royal Montreal.

It is truly remarkable to think that Scottie Scheffler has not won a match in the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup since 2021, having gone 0-5-3 over the last two years. Three of those losses came at Quail Hollow two years ago.

Those who did not watch the 2022 Presidents Cup would probably assume that Sam Burns struggled to keep up with the two-time Masters champion, with the pair teaming up on three occasions in Charlotte. However, Burns was actually the one in much better form.

Ultimately, Zach Johnson split Scheffler and Burns up after just one session in Rome. So there is likely to be a question mark over who Scheffler will play alongside over the coming days in Canada. Based on his form this year, you probably could pair him with anyone – particularly in the fourballs.

But it would be a huge shot in the arm for the Internationals if Jim Furyk struggles to find the right partner for Scheffler. So the pressure is definitely on.

However, speaking on Golf Channel, Brandel Chamblee insisted that it seems to be too soon to write off the partnership of Burns and Scheffler.

“I am looking at Scottie Scheffler as a completely new player in this. It is too early to bail on Scottie Scheffler and Burns. I really do. Correct me if I am wrong, on this golf course, and in four ball play you look for birdie output. They are one and two in the world in terms of birdie percentage. On paper they are by far the best team,” he said.

“With Scottie, Sahith and Morikawa make perfect sense but I can’t for the life of me imagine why you would break up Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns. It’s just too early to make a definitive statement about whether or not they could make a formidable team,” he added.

An important task ahead of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage

Certainly, pairing Scheffler with Burns would be the safest option for Jim Furyk – who does not appear to be particularly keen to upset the apple cart and spring some surprises.

Ultimately, Scheffler is just too good to remain a weak point for the US team. And it would be incredibly naive for the Internationals to assume that the 28-year-old will continue to struggle. At some stage, everything is likely to click.

He is very close with Burns, so that comfort may help bring the best out of Scheffler. And it would certainly be extremely helpful to Keegan Bradley and the US if they can find the right partner for Scheffler ahead of next year’s Ryder Cup.
