Max Homa suggests whether he could appoint Michael Greller as caddie permanently after working with him at The Sentry

Max Homa finished 19-under-par at The Sentry, a remarkable 16 shots back of record-breaking winner Hideki Matsuyama.

The 2021 Masters winner posted the lowest four-round score in PGA Tour history to finish three shots clear of Collin Morikawa.

In regard to Homa, it’s been an eventful couple of weeks for the six-time PGA Tour winner. After Homa split with his coach in October, the 34-year-old started working with Scott Rattan – the director of instruction at Congressional.

What’s more, the American also used new clubs, attire and caddie during his four days at Kapalua.

Fans and pundits were surprised to see Jordan Spieth’s caddie, Michael Greller, on the bag for Homa. With Joe Greiner – Homa’s caddie – taking time off and Spieth recovering from injury, the US Presidents Cup star explained how his partnership with Greller came to pass.

“It was great. It was kind of funny – and I understand everyone’s take on it,” Homa told the No Laying Up podcast. “Everyone was trying to do like a behind the scenes, trying to have me and Grella talk about all these things, but it’s not like either of us are celebrating this. I would much rather have had Joe there.

“Joe has been going through some stuff at home, so it was a real bummer not to have him out there. I missed him a lot. You never want to start your season without your guy.
And Micheal has Jordan at home still rehabbing his wrist, so it was a bummer. But as far as plan B’s go, that was the best plan B out there. I had a ton of fun. He is one of the greatest dudes out there. His family is amazing.”

Homa also discussed how Greller was on the course at Kapalua during his podcast appearance.

“He is an amazing caddie,” he added. “Not so much you can do in just a week, but he was pretty incredible. I hit a bad shot on 14 and 15. He really got me back into what the whole goal of the week was, and we birdied the next four holes.

“I thought that was neat to see how he internalised what I was doing and gave me a challenge to lock back in for four holes. I thought that was awesome, so the best substitute. He did an amazing job, but I think we are both happy to go back to our regularly scheduled jobs pretty soon.”

When is Max Homa playing next?

Homa is next in action on night two of the TGL as Tiger Woods’ Jupiter Links GC face off against Atlanta Drive at the SoFi Centre.

With Homa not in the field for the Sony Open, the American’s next PGA Tour event will likely be the American Express before Farmers Insurance and the AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach.

Homa has had success on the West Coast before, having won the Farmer Insurance at Torrey Pines in 2023, the Fortinet Championship twice in Napa, and the 2021 Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club.
