Max Homa is currently without a swing coach after splitting up with his coach, Mark Blackburn, during the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Homa struggled for form last season and had significant issues with his driver before the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club.

Thankfully, the American managed to find some rhythm in Quebec, helping the USA clinch a tenth successive victory over the International side.

Homa split with Blackburn after the St Jude Championship, and now, the 33-year-old has been discussing what practice has been like without his long-term mentor.

Speaking before this week’s ZOZO Championship, Homa admitted it’s been nice to figure out his swing without any outside influence.

“It’s been about two months now,” Homa explained. “I am definitely a little rusty. I took a bit of time off after the Presidents Cup. I have had some help along the way, but it’s been nice trying to figure out and own my stuff a bit more. My swing feels okay.”

Homa continued: “You get a little rusty and are working on new stuff; it’s not really the most fun thing in the world. But at times, golf can feel like riding a bike, especially when you get on a golf course and at the range. You can start seeing shots and feeling what is going to work well.

“This is a good golf course to do that on because the holes are shaped nicely by the trees. It’s been a chaotic few weeks, especially last week, getting ready for this. We got here Sunday, and I was happy to have Monday to Wednesday to get some work done and spend a bunch of time on the course.”

Homa’s first competitive round since the Presidents Cup didn’t go to plan. The American carded a three-over 73 to start his week at Accordia Narashino Country Club.

Starting on the tenth, Homa made four bogeys on his opening nine holes, including a six on the par-five 18th, to shoot 39.

Coming in, Homa would make two more bogeys on one and two before picking up shots on five and six to shoot 34 coming in.

Homa is joined by Presidents Cup teammates Xander Schauffele and Sahith Theegala, who are on the same number.

Taylor Moore leads the way after carding an exquisite seven-under 63 on day one. May Greyserman, Nico Echavarria and Eric Cole sit one shot back on six under.
