It is hard not to be intrigued about TGL, with the league set to debut on Tuesday night after more than two years of anticipation.
TGL is finally here, with New York Golf Club and The Bay Golf Club set to contest the first fixture. It is a unique concept, with 24 of the PGA Tour‘s best players competing in an indoor competition.
They will be mic’d up, while they will also be able to play off a variety of lies, including out of sand. And there is also a green for putts to be hit on. And with 13 major champions involved including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, it is clear to see why some think TGL has serious potential.
However, there are also some reservations.
Max Homa responds to fan’s prediction that TGL will be a disappointment
The players will not only need to impress with their golf skills, but also their trash-talk. Fans are going to get to see if the players do have a different side to them.

But when you consider how underwhelming The Showdown proved to be, it is not difficult to see why some have some real reservations about how good the concept is going to be.
However, it appears that the players involved are confident. In fact, Max Homa confirmed on X that his view on TGL has changed after visiting the SoFi Center as he responded to a fan who predicted a disappointing product. And with that, he insisted that it will be a special experience for those who attend.
What TGL can learn from The Showdown
The Showdown has perhaps highlighted some important lessons TGL can take. On paper, a matchplay battle between Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka should have been easy to sell. They are four of the biggest names in the sport, on either side of golf’s divide and boasting 13 major titles between them.
But those who had doubts were proven right. It was a mouthwatering heavyweight clash which simply did not deliver.
Billy Horschel noted how important it is that the TGL players are entertainers after watching The Showdown. Of course, they should not force the banter between the teams. That will almost be as uncomfortable to watch as the teams not interacting at all.
Perhaps those who are optimistic will have their bubble burst once TGL gets going. Certainly, some expect that to be the case. But there does appear to be reason to be hopeful.
