The Players Championship is heating up with lots of players in position to win ahead of the final round on Sunday.

Rory McIlroy, Will Zalatoris and Akshay Bhatia are some of the high-profile names near the top of the leaderboard, while there are also plenty of unlikely contenders.

However, many top players have already departed TPC Sawgrass after missing the cut on Friday.

Brian Harman, Justin Rose and Hideki Matsuyama all exited the tournament before the weekend but it’s another major champion who has since parted ways with his caddie.

Matt Fitzpatrick splits with caddie after missed cut at Players Championship

Two-time major winner Matt Fitzpatrick was six over par after two rounds at The Players and missed the cut by seven shots.

His performance at Sawgrass pretty much summed up what has been an underwhelming start to the 2025 season for the Englishman.

The former world number six was only just outside the top 20 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational but he finished 49th at the Genesis Invitational and missed the cut at the Phoenix Open in his two previous appearances.

He has now split with long-time caddie Billy Foster, who had previously worked with Seve Ballesteros, Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood.

Foster has posted the following message on Instagram to confirm the news: “Well after 6 great years, all good things come to an end. This game never stops to frustrate you & infuriate you….!!!

“Unfortunately times change & ultimately it’s the caddie or the coach that has to accept results are not good enough & when you stop enjoying what you are doing it’s time for a change.

“Thanks Matt we had a great run & who knows where the next chapter will go. Onwards & Upwards.”

Who knows what Foster’s plans are, but he surely won’t find it too difficult to find another PGA Tour player to work with if that’s what he desires.

Matt Fitzpatrick’s best moments with caddie Billy Foster

Foster started working with Fitzpatrick in 2018 and the pair enjoyed some incredible moments in their seven years together.

The 30-year-old’s career highlight is his 2022 US Open win at The Country Club in Brookline, where he finished one shot ahead of Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler.

He has also won the DP World Tour Championship twice (2016 and 2020) and beat Jordan Spieth in a play-off at the 2023 RBC Heritage.

It’s a shame that Fitzpatrick and Foster have split up after so much success, but the reality is that he has regressed a long way recently and something had to change.
