Despite a marquee signing yet to materialise, the LIV Golf League has had a busy couple of months, with several new additions made ahead of the 2025 season.

Rumour and speculation have been rife of late. Six-time PGA Tour winner Tony Finau was the highest-profile PGA Tour player linked with LIV; however, the Salt Lake City native will remain on golf’s traditional circuit for now.

When it comes to confirmed news, Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces have signed Thomas Pieters, the Iron Heads have added Yubin Jang, Frederik Kjettrup has joined Cleeks GC and Luis Masaveu has signed for Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs.

LIV is clearly considering signing up-and-coming younger talent, and Eddie Pepperell believes a strategy is now emerging.

What Eddie Pepperell has said about LIV Golf’s transfer strategy

Speaking on the latest Chipping Forecast, Pepperell reacted to LIV targeting younger European players as opposed to the well-known stars on the PGA Tour.

“I think the other signings, Kjettrup and the young Spanish lad Masaveu, they are definitely targeting European players LIV, and it is becoming increasingly clear that Americans are not that interested in LIV, but LIV is targeting a more global audience,” Pepperell said.

“That does bode the question over the pressure that this is going to exert on the DP World Tour across time, which is going to be quite significant. The future is very uncertain there, and it is becoming clearer to see a pathway forward where LIV and DP World Tour and the global aspect become a thing.”

He added: “One thing you could say, and I don’t think you would have said this a year ago when it was first mooted, an agreement was in the offing that seemed to work in LIV’s favour, in terms of signing Jon Rahm and Tyyrell. But I think the opposite is now happening, especially in regard to the big players who have got PGA Tour status.

“Because they are looking at this thinking, why should I go to LIV right now? There is potential for me to have an opportunity on LIV in the next 12 to 18 months, so why would I give up the security of what I have got on the PGA Tour? LIV are not signing big US players as a consequence of this agreement that is offing, that we still don’t know about, but they are targeting young European players and that is going to be problematic for the DP World Tour across time, I would imagine.”

Will LIV Golf sign marquee player before 2025 season starts?

The prospect of a marquee PGA Tour signing now feels unlikely, with many having started their 2025 seasons. If a move were going to materialise, an agreement would’ve been reached before the season opener at The Sentry.

There is, however, an interesting piece of transfer news very much in the offing.

Tom McKibbin, who earned a PGA Tour card in 2024, is reportedly set to sign for LIV Golf and become, arguably, the league’s highest-profile off-season addition.

McKibbin hasn’t denied the rumours, and it’s believed the 22-year-old is lined up to join Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII. Rahm has been on the lookout for a fourth member after Kieran Vincent was relegated at the end of the 2024 season.
