Jordan Spieth fired a final round of nine-under-par 62 at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson on Sunday, and then made claims about Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler immediately after his round.

Spieth is chasing the career Grand Slam, and only needs the PGA Championship to complete the set.

His final round at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson on Sunday proved that he is very much in with a fighter’s chance of lifting the Wannamaker Trophy at Quail Hollow.

Spieth eagled the final hole of his third round on Saturday, and that seemed to set him up perfectly for his final day charge on Sunday at TPC Craig Ranch.

The 31-year-old Texan appears to have found some form at just the right time. But is he really capable of matching McIlroy and Scheffler blow for blow throughout the remainder of 2025?

McIlroy has been in imperious form so far this season, with three wins to his name including The Players Championship and of course, The Masters.

At Augusta National, McIlroy fought back from numerous potential disasters to win The Masters, and now he will really fancy his chances at Quail Hollow later this month.

Meanwhile, Scheffler is on course to pick up his first win of the season at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. At the time of writing, he had a nine-shot lead with five holes left to play.

Scheffler’s eight-shot lead after three days at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson was the largest lead since the one that McIlroy held at the US Open in 2011.

Jordan Spieth makes comments about Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler

Spieth knows what it takes to win major championships.

He won three in a two year period from 2015-2017. However, his game has regressed badly over the past few years.

It has been suggested that Spieth has become far too mechanical on the golf course, and there is undoubtedly some truth to that.

However, during the final day’s play at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, he seemed to be far more freed up than he has done during any other round of golf this season.

Spieth spoke after his round on Sunday, and responded when asked whether McIlroy’s win at The Masters last month inspired him to go on and complete a Grand Slam of his own:

Not only did he complete it (McIlroy) but the time it took to complete it. It was obviously a very challenging week for him. It was harder than anybody ever trying to win a Masters. To be that far from his most recent major as well and go do it was very inspiring.

Quail Hollow is a Bermuda golf course, which I love. I grew up on Bermuda. You have got to play really fast greens and my ball striking is coming around at a really nice time. I feel like I have been progressing each week since the surgery, so hopefully I can have a really good week next week and maybe go to the PGA and see if I can keep up with this guy [Scottie Scheffler] but that has been hard to do!

What Phil Mickelson once said about Spieth’s short game

Mickelson is obviously a huge fan of Spieth, specifically his short game.

Back in 2023, Spieth opened up on what Mickelson told him about his chipping and pitching action:

Every single shot that I hit on or around the greens is a cut shot, I never hit a draw. It’s always a cut, whether it’s a flop, a bump and run, that’s a pretty straight face but even little cut-spinning bump and runs I can control better because I’m getting down into the ball. I talked to Phil Mickelson about this, he came up to me and said, ‘you’re one of the only people that I see like myself that really likes to cover the golf ball’. And I said, ‘Phil I really like the way you said that’. I always say feel like you’re driving it into the ground, don’t be afraid to take a divot even from short range. I never chip a ball, I’m always driving it. The hands are forward, the weight is forward on almost every shot, and it’s all a cut motion. It’s just where is that handle, and where is the starting club face and where is that release pattern that gets the height and spin.

Whilst Spieth made a career for himself with his outstanding chipping, he hasn’t been anywhere near as good around the greens over the past few years.

Spieth has actually been driving the ball very well recently, but if he is to get back to the top, he must drastically improve his chipping and pitching.
