Jon Rahm has been forced to continue his wait for another major championship win after finishing well off the pace at The Open.

Rahm wants more credit for changing his game in recent times, but he will be disappointed after ending his week at The Open down the leaderboard.

He carded rounds of 70, 72, 69 and 70 as many of his fellow professionals shot much lower scores at Royal Portrush.

Rahm was among 19 LIV Golf players taking on The Open this week, 11 of whom made the cut in Northern Ireland.

And finishing level with Rahm was his fellow LIV Golf player and fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia, who the former discussed after his final round of the latest major championship.

Jon Rahm tells Luke Donald to consider fellow LIV Golf player for 2025 Ryder Cup

Asked how special it would be for both him and Garcia to make the European team for the 2025 Ryder Cup, Rahm replied: “It would be very special.

“I’d like to be on the team first myself and then think about somebody else. Yeah, it would be quite unique.

“He would be a fantastic guy obviously with his Ryder Cup experience, how he played in the Northeast and actually having played at Bethpage, having played well at Bethpage in the past, so somebody that’s familiar with the golf course.

“He’s definitely somebody that should be on Luke’s [Donald] radar. Played fantastic earlier in the year too.

“He was playing some extremely high-quality golf. Maybe not so much the last six weeks or so. I played with him last week in Valderrama, and he was still striking it beautifully, which is what you need in many aspects of golf in the Ryder Cup.

“Especially a golf course that difficult, somebody who’s hitting it well. Again, I like to think about myself first in that case. If I get the call that I’m in, then I worry about somebody like Sergio.”

Can Sergio Garcia do enough to impress Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald?

Garcia has now taken on three of the four major championships in 2025, having missed out on a spot at the US Open.

He missed the cut at The Masters, a tournament he won in 2017, before finishing T67 at the PGA Championship.

Garcia talks regularly with Donald, who will once again captain the European Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black after doing so in Rome 2023.

The next edition of the team event takes place in September, with Rory McIlroy the only player to have qualified for the visiting side at this stage.

Sergio Garcia 2025 LIV Golf results

He tops the current rankings for Team Europe, with Tyrrell Hatton the best-placed LIV Golf representative in fourth.

But it’s been a different story on LIV Golf so far, with Rahm second in the individual standings, closely followed by Garcia in fifth as Hatton is down in 21st.

Time is rapidly running out for the hopefuls to impress Donald, who looks set to have a very difficult job on his hands with his captain’s picks.

He’ll need help from his vice-captains, but players can of course take that decision out of their hands by qualifying automatically.
