J.J. Spaun enjoyed an unforgettable week at the US Open, which culminated in him lifting the trophy at Oakmont.

Robert MacIntyre thought he had won the US Open after finishing his round on one-over, only for Spaun to birdie the last two holes.

He ended his four rounds at the US Open on one-under, the only player under par, to secure a two-shot win and his first major championship title.

It also represented just his second win on the PGA Tour, following his success at the Valero Texas Open in 2022.

He also won that event by two shots, while Spaun came agonisingly close to another triumph earlier this year at The Players Championship.

The American lost in a playoff to Rory McIlroy, shortly after another runner-up finish at the Cognizant Classic.

But he finally got over the line at the US Open, with the champion now sharing his delight at having had his family at Oakmont to share in his success.

He said on Today: “It’s just a fairytale, storybook ending where everything aligned properly. Having my family there, having my Dad there, getting to embrace him and getting flashbacks of the entire journey that I have been on.

“To have their support the entire way, it was how it was supposed to end. He just said you did it, you’re a champ and I love you and I am so proud of you.”

J.J. Spaun says why golf was the ‘last thing’ on his mind on Sunday at the US Open

Spaun finished superbly at Oakmont, with a stunning 64-foot putt helping him clinch birdie and the title on the 18th green.

But that arrived after a poor start to his final round, which began with three consecutive bogeys and five from his first six holes.

Afterwards, Spaun revealed he was awake at 3am before his final round due to his daughter being sick with a stomach bug.

Asked how he compartmentalised at Oakmont given that situation, he said: “It’s nice having my family out there, not only to be with them and enjoy time with family, but they are also a great distraction when I get off the course.

“So whether I am leading a tournament like for instance The Players back in March, I was by myself that week, so I was sitting in a hotel room letting my mind race.

“So it’s nice to have them there to distract me. And obviously that early wake up call on Sunday morning was a huge distraction but Dad instincts kicked in, I tried to do my best to get my daughter feeling well. I felt terrible for her and golf was the last thing on my mind.”
