J.J. Spaun achieved golfing nirvana with his thrilling victory at the US Open on Sunday.

Spaun had won only one PGA Tour event before his scintillating US Open triumph.

The 34-year-old got off to a nightmarish start at Oakmont during the final round, bogeying five of his first six holes.

He also got dealt one of the worst breaks you will ever see when his ball careened off the flag on the second hole and rolled back 40 yards short of the green.

However, he played his remaining 12 holes in three-under par to become the US Open champion.

Interestingly, Spaun spoke about the pace of play during the US Open earlier on in the week, and he was one of the few players who didn’t actually make a big deal out of it.

That says a lot about his patience, and would have definitely been a huge contributing factor to his success at Oakmont.

He won the US Open with birdies on his final two holes.

His exceptional tee shot on the 17th led to a two-putt birdie and amazingly, Spaun said he hit exactly the same drive on that hole at Oakmont during his practice round.

He then finished with a flourish on the final hole, and he was more than deserving of his win.

Spaun’s poor start to his final round surprised many.

He had played so solidly during the first three rounds of the tournament.

However, there might now be a simple explanation for his struggles during the early part of his fourth round at Oakmont.

Spaun spoke to reporters after he won the US Open, and made a startling admission about what he was doing at 3am on Sunday morning.

He said, Today I was running to CVS in downtown because my daughter had a stomach bug and was vomiting all night long. I was just like, okay, my wife was up at 3:00 a.m., and she’s like, Violet is vomiting all over. She can’t keep anything down. It was kind of a rough start to the morning. I’m not blaming that on my start, but it kind of fit the mold of what was going on, the chaos.

I don’t think I had any — I didn’t really — like when I go back home after the round, my kids are there, and it’s such a big distraction where I’m not even having to dwell on anything or think too much, which is a good thing.

Like THE PLAYERS was tough, I was alone that week, and I’m just kind of sitting there at night in my hotel room, like trying not to go on social media, trying not to go on Twitter or whatever, X. It’s nice to be able to have the kids to be around and be a dad. That kind of keeps your mind off golf and kind of gets me in a calm, cool, collective mindset going into today.

How good is that. Spaun is a father first and foremost, and how fitting it is that his first major win came on Father’s Day!

J.J. Spaun’s US Open stats

Spaun was the most consistent operator all round at Oakmont this week.

That’s why he is now the US Open champion.

He entered the event without anyone talking about him but now everyone will be wise to just how good he is.

Spaun clearly has the game to contend in the very biggest tournaments in the game, after his sensational US Open win.

And after he broke his major duck, he will now be looking to go on and win many more.
