It’s quite possible that the Sunday of The Masters 2025 will go down as one of the very best days in the world of golf, as Rory McIlroy finally got his hands on that precious green jacket.
It was a rollercoaster ride over the four days at Augusta National, with Rory McIlroy floundering on day one, before picking up his game in the second and third round.
McIlroy took a 54-hole lead of two strokes into the final day, with Bryson DeChambeau chasing just behind. But, as the fourth round unfolded, DeChambeau fell away, McIlroy missed some golden opportunities to secure the win, and Justin Rose battled back to level things by the end.
Thankfully, he kept his cool in the play-off and clinched the win with a perfect three-shot play on the second attempt on the 18th.
The relief in McIlroy’s immediate reaction was clear for all to see, and the momentous occasion has prompted a flurry of positive messages and responses from his peers in the game.

What Fred Couples and Ian Poulter said about Rory McIlroy’s Masters win
Golfing legend Fred Couples took to Twitter/X to share his thoughts on McIlroy’s victory, claiming it to be a truly ‘historic achievement’ in the sport.
He wrote: “Congrats Rory, that Green Jacket looks good on you. Congrats on winning your first at The Masters and completing the career Grand Slam. A historic achievement that puts you with a group of players who are on another level in our game. I look forward to celebrating your win at dinner next April.”
Meanwhile, Ian Poulter praised McIlroy’s patience and perseverance over on his Instagram story, while also saving some credit for Justin Rose, too.
He shared a photo of McIlroy’s winning moment, writing: “Congratulations Rory McIlroy on finally getting that coveted green jacket to finish the grand slam. It’s been a long time waiting but the wait I’m sure was well worth it.
“Justin Rose, incredible golf today buddy, really impressive.”
This praise follows a humble message from Bryson DeChambeau, some surprise celebration from the folks at LIV Golf, and even random reactions from the likes of Adam Sandler and Rafael Nadal.
Clearly, this is a moment that has united the world of golf, and indeed, the world of sport, as a true legend finally gets his reward for years of hard work.

Tommy Fleetwood had plenty to say about Rory McIlroy, too
McIlroy’s good friend and European colleague, Tommy Fleetwood, also got involved in the celebrations, taking time to commend both the winner and the runner-up on the day.
Fleetwood took to Twitter/X and wrote: “A place alongside the greats of the game and possibly the greatest mentally resilient achievement ever in our sport. So happy for you, Rory, and everyone involved and to be there to witness it was truly special.”
On Rose, Fleetwood added: “Justin, you are and always will be one of my golfing idols.”
Not everyone has been quite as positive, though, with Sky Sports pundit Paul McGinley criticised for his comments on McIlroy in the aftermath of the victory. McGinley claimed the Northern Irishman was ‘not everyone’s cup of tea’ which sparked uproar as fans suggested the comment was ill-timed during what should have been a celebratory moment for McIlroy.
