Rory McIlroy endured a frustrating US Open at Oakmont, finishing on seven-over after narrowly making the cut.

McIlroy made US Open history in his final round, having carded a three-under 67 to follow his previous 74, 72 and 74.

Five-time major champion McIlroy can take confidence from the US Open, although he will have planned a more impressive display.

McIlroy wasn’t the only high-profile name to struggle at Oakmont, with former champions Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson among those to have not even made the cut.

Johnson won the US Open when it was last hosted at Oakmont in 2016, with the venue once again set to host the tournament in 2033.

Their fellow LIV Golf player and defending champion Bryson DeChambeau didn’t speak to the media after missing the cut, with McIlroy having also neglected his media duties after his first two rounds.

He did, however, speak following rounds three and four, with BBC Sport Northern Ireland’s Stephen Watson sharing insight into McIlroy’s dealings with the media after his final round.

“Rory McIlroy was on good form today,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “Yesterday, his interview with the gathered media was difficult.

“He was a little short – you could tell he didn’t really want to be there. It was a tense three or four minutes.

“I understand his indifference to some of the reporting because he will probably think he’s given a lot of the reporters the greatest story they’ll ever report on.

“Today it was different. A smaller huddle. Predominantly journalists from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. He was a lot more giving with his time. It was nice to hear Rory a little more upbeat today.”

McIlroy fell well short of a fourth PGA Tour win of the season, and the 30th title of his stunning career so far.

He never really looked like mounting a serious challenge after his early struggles, in what was a very frustrating tournament for him more than anything else.

McIlroy largely failed to cope with that frustration from Thursday to Sunday, with the Oakmont conditions playing a big part in his woes.

It was a different story entirely when he won the 2011 US Open at Congressional Country Club, his first of five major championship victories.
