It has definitely been an eventful week for Rory McIlroy at the US Open, with the Northern Irishman ending the tournament at seven over par at Oakmont.

Despite realistically being out of contention from day one, Rory McIlroy has barely been out of the headlines throughout the US Open. The 36-year-old has continued to struggle to rediscover his outstanding form from earlier in the year.

McIlroy ended up only just making the cut at Oakmont. And he made no secret of the fact that he wanted to complete his final round with little fuss and get away from the course when speaking to the media on Saturday.

But it turns out that despite the disappointment, McIlroy does leave Oakmont having made a little bit of US Open history.

McIlroy gave himself little to smile about on the golf course throughout the tournament. He posted two rounds of 74 either side of a 72 over the first three days in Pennsylvania.

But he looked a lot more like his old self on Sunday. His 67 saw him move into the top 30 by the time his round had concluded.

And, as noted by Justin Ray on X, it turns out that McIlroy became the first player in history to post 10 rounds of 67 or better in the US Open.

It will not surprise anyone to learn that McIlroy broke 68 twice during his victory at Congressional back in 2011. But he would only do it once more over the next nine years.

He opened up with rounds of 65 at both LACC and Pinehurst before going to finish second.

His stunning run of top 10s in the US Open will come to an end this week. But his performance on Sunday has the potential to be something of another turning point in his season.
