How much money Sahith Theegala cost himself after taking a two shot penalty at the Tour Championship

Sahith Theegala produced some fine golf to finish third in the FedEx Cup this weekend as he couldn’t quite reel in Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler broke a record set previously by Tiger Woods to win his 13th PGA Tour event in record time and in doing so, pocket a cool $25m in the process.

Of course, Theegala could have been a bit closer to Scheffler heading into day four of the Tour Championship had he not been so honest in round three.

Theegala was praised by fans for admitting he touched the sand and in turn, took a two-shot penalty.

Indeed, Theegala admitted the decision had upset him as it effectively ended his hopes of a win.

And adding further insult to injury, it appears Theegala’s honesty has cost him a nice chunk of change as well.

In a tweet shared by golf journalist Kyle Porter, it seems Theegala has cost himself a few million dollars in being so honest.

Theegala finished, coincidentally, two shots behind Collin Morikawa in second.

And given how much prize money was on offer at the FedEx finale, that single place difference is expensive.

Morikawa has pocketed himself a cool $12.5m for finishing second, with Theegala hardly struggling back in third by landing $7.5m.

Of course, it’s hard to tell how the two shots would have played out in full but there’s a chance that Theegala might have had more momentum to surpass Morikawa.

Likewise, had he simply had the two shots back, he’d have been level, meaning a share of the spoils and an extra $2.5m in his back pocket in doing so.

Of course, golf isn’t always about the money and as mentioned, Theegala has still taken home a huge cheque.

And in the main, his honesty stands out over a few extra million anyway.
