Hideki Matsuyama says how he feels about playing on Rory McIlroy’s TGL team after schedule announced

Hideki Matsuyama is set to feature on Rory McIlroy’s TGL team, with the innovative golf league finally starting in the new year.

The TGL will see six teams from six separate cities face off in two-hour long matches which incorporate virtual and real-life golf.

Tiger Woods starts his TGL season on January 14, and Rory McIlroy is in action just a week later. McIlroy’s team, Boston Common Golf, includes Matsuyama, Keegan Bradley and former Masters winner Adam Scott.

Matsuyama is competing at the ZOZO Championship in his native Japan, and the world number seven was quizzed on the TGL ahead of this week’s FedEx Cup fall event at Accordia Narashino Country Club.

Speaking during his press conference on Tuesday, the former Masters winner admitted he’s excited about the prospect of playing on McIlroy’s team.

“I am really looking forward to the new TGL league next year,” Matsuyama said. “The schedule just came out.

“It will be a different schedule for me next year with a few added events, but I am really looking forward to playing on the team that I am on, and hopefully, we will do well.”

The ZOZO Championship is the 32-year-old’s first event since the Presidents Cup. Matsuyama starred for Mike Weir’s International Team and beat Scottie Scheffler during the singles.

Matsuyama won’t represent Boston Common Golf Club until match four of the inaugural TGL. McIlroy’s men face Tiger Woods‘ Jupiter Links Golf Club on Monday, January 27 at 6:30 pm.

The Japanese star will appear once more in match five, which will be played on February 4 against Los Angeles Golf Club.

ESPN is set to air all matches during prime-time evening slots and will host a Presidents Day tripleheader involving Atlanta Drive GC, Los Angeles Golf Club, The Bay Golf Club and Boston Common Golf.

The semi-finals will take place in mid-March, with the final series on March 24-25.
