The 2025 LIV Golf season is just days away, and the PIF-backed league will start in Riyadh under the cover of darkness.

The Saudi Arabia event will be Tom McKibbin’s first LIV start after his move to Legion XIII was confirmed last week.

What’s more, YouTube star Rick Shiels will also be working with LIV this season after the 39-year-old announced a multi-year partnership with the league. Shiels will be filming content at every single LIV event, and his first ‘Break 75’ attempt will take place at Riyadh Golf Club in the Saudi capital.

Interestingly, the first LIV event will be played under floodlit conditions, similar to what was seen during the recent Showdown in Las Vegas.

Golf fans praised LIV’s decision to play the first event at night, and further excitement emerged after footage of Dustin Johnson playing the course was released.

The former Masters champion was seen playing several holes on Sunday, and watching his ball against the dark backdrop was pretty impressive.

And many golf fans on X cannot wait for the action to start.

“Ball flights are going to look brilliant under lights on TV and live,” one fan wrote.

While another said: “This is going to be unreal!”

“Can’t wait for the golf season to finally get going this week. It’s been a long 4 months without top-tier pro golf.  Night golf is going to be a great addition,” wrote this fan.

Another added: “So sick. I can get behind this.”

Finally, these X comments said: “This is so awesome. It’s crazy but awesome.”

“I’ll be honest, I am looking forward to watching this night golf by LIV.”

What Rory McIlroy said about floodlit golf

It will be intriguing to see if any LIV Golf players are better suited to night golf. Cooler temperatures will impact yardages and ball flight; what’s more, the putting surfaces may be trickier to navigate.

After the Showdown, World number one Scottie Scheffler highlighted some of the challenges he faced when playing under the lights.

“Under the lights was fun. Like you said, it’s really challenging. The distances that we were hitting our shots changed significantly from the beginning of the match,” he said.

Rory McIlroy also found it tough. “We were just saying before we got back on air how difficult it is to play under the lights and how difficult it is to putt under the lights especially,” said the four-time major winner.
